Global Bridages Medical Chapter (Chimaltenango, Guatemala), Volunteer

Volunteered abroad (and served as Brigade Photographer) for a week setting up and assisting staff in a rural clinic in Chimaltenango, Guatemala to provide communtiy-dictated aid to surrounding communities. Worked triage, optometry, consult, and OB/GYN stations to help provide care to patients. Communicated with patients in Spanish (with minimal to moderate aid from transaltors) to complete intake forms, gathered and packaged medication in their correct dosages and gave administration directions, and observed procedures such as pap smears as well as clinical consults with physicians.

Baton Rouge Regional Eye Bank (Our Lady of the Lake), Recovery Coordinator

Coordinate cornea and whole eye recoveries in preparation for transplants. In this role, I track down and examine patients’ medical and social histories to determine if they are viable candidates for eye and cornea donation. Additionally, I coordinate with the state's organ procurement agency, local coroners' offices, local hospitals, and medical professionals to facilitate recovery and contact patients’ families to obtain consent for recovery. I also serve as a direct supervisor to recovery technicians, whom I dispatch to the correct location if recovery is deemed appropriate for a patients. In this role, I also review any medical abnormailites observed by technicians.

Summer Health Professions Education Program (SHPEP), SHPEP Scholar
